Local Nonprofit Starts the Year Off on the Right Paw ...

Grant Award Gives Organization A Boost!

PAAWS Receives $10,000 grant from U. of O. Philanthropy class

For immediate release January 16, 2006 news:

Eugene, OR – People and Animals Who Serve (PAAWS) is beginning 2006 with its best paw forward after receiving a $10,000 grant at the end of last year. The fall U of O Graduate Philanthropy class had the opportunity to make a $10,000 award to a local nonprofit on behalf of the Faye and Lucille Stewart Foundation. After a process of proposals, research and presentations, the award was presented to PAAWS for their position as a unique organization, serving the needs of the community, and with the potential to grow dramatically.

PAAWS provides animal-assisted activities, therapy and emotional support to community members in various states of need and crisis. Pet-partner teams, made up of registered pets and their owners, participate in one or more of the programs’ offered by PAAWS. Those programs include Animal Assisted Crisis Response, No One Dies Alone, Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D), and visits to local hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, youth treatment centers and other facilities.

“The grant gives us great potential for PAAWS to grow and add more opportunities for us to interact with the community. One of the first things we intend to offer is scholarships for low-income community members to become registered pet-partners with their animals,” commented Cindy Ehlers, PAAWS President.

There are currently a limited number of pet partner teams which impacts the organization’s ability to meet community needs. Financial support will allow PAAWS to give scholarships to help new owners and their pets (dogs, cats, llamas or other animal—yes, llamas!) get registered to be a therapy animal, and or for dog owners to pass evaluation to become a qualified crisis response team or to participate in one of the specialized programs within PAAWS. Resources would also be used to support current pet partner teams responding to crisis, enhance marketing of their programs and add supplies for the R.E.A.D program.

Students involved in awarding the grant supported PAAWS because while other groups in the running could have funded some small portion of yearly operations, the $10,000 will provide the fundamental support to PAAWS operations for at least three years including growth.
